Letter: Tourism pushback in Spain an omen of things to come
Letter to the editor. FILE

Dear editor:

Our tourist board and Chamber of Commerce’s ever-increasing push towards attracting more tourists to NOTL should take note of the current crisis experienced in other countries worldwide.
Witness for example the reporting and pictures in the Aug. 1 edition of the U.K.’s Daily Mail: “Europe’s tourism invasion.”
For the third year in a row, riot police have clashed with local tourist protesters in Majorca, Spain. In NOTL, for years, tourism has been at the forefront of our elected officials’ minds at the expense of our quality of life.
From March through October, I suspect a local residency survey of the overcrowded streets in Old Town would barely result in one per cent being locals.
I have reported previously that tourism will be the eventual downfall of our local culture. We are nearing, or past, the point of no return, yet more tourism is our number one priority.
