Dear editor:

On Monday evening, I lost a one-of-a-kind pearl necklace while walking along Gate Street. After my husband and I searched the street on Tuesday morning, we reached out to local restaurants and shops on Queen Street asking for help. I also spoke to a neighbour who suggested contacting the Tourist Information Centre, as it often functions as a “lost and found.”

I wrote to the local paper explaining that the pearls had been given to me by my birth mother and held tremendous sentimental value.

Meanwhile, Ron and Barb Zimmerman of Lakeside Pottery had found the necklace while walking on Gate Street Monday evening. Not sure where to take it, Barb thought to email the Tourist Information Centre on Tuesday morning to try to locate the owner.

Following my neighbour’s advice, I stopped in at the Tourist Information Centre late Tuesday afternoon to report it missing. I had barely begun telling my story when I was told, “I know who has your necklace.”

When Barb and I met, it felt as though we were instant friends.

Throughout the search, I encountered remarkable kindness from people at the restaurant, grocery store, Tourist Information Centre and neighbours we met along the way. The experience left us with a wonderful impression of the Niagara-on-the-Lake community.

Most heroic of all, of course, are the Zimmermans, whose pottery is soon to find its way into our home as an enduring reminder of their kindness.
