Anyone who’s moderately familiar with Canadian art has almost certainly heard of the Group of Seven — but not everyone may know how one of its founding members had a hand in memorializing the Great War, through his art.
The church hall in Virgil was already busy by the lunch’s start-time of 11 a.m., as people lined up to enjoy the hearty meal of borscht, alongside fresh, homemade bread and desserts.
With displays ranging from pine needle baskets to towering sculptural pieces, judges, carvers and curious onlookers were eager to appreciate the art at the competition’s new location.
Kathryn Jordan gave a heartfelt address at the Legion on King Street in honour of her father, John Jordan, who, after witnessing the horrors of war, returned home to lead a life of service.
With the holiday season officially here, locals took in the sight of festive decorations as far as the eye could see last weekend at Regal Florist & Garden Centre.
“It means a lot to be involved. There’s just something so special about doing something like this,” said vocalist Abby Cabaj.
“It’s a collection of work I’m doing that means something to me — and I’m getting other people to be able to see it,” Cullis said.
The bazaar aimed to raise funds for church expenses, as well as to support local charities and initiatives.
Running from October through February, the breakfast series raises funds for community causes, including local minor sports, St. David’s School and the Red Roof Retreat.
“We just love the area. All the shops are beautiful, and it being fall just makes it that much prettier,” said one visitor to NOTL who stopped by the Harvest Festival on Saturday.
With better-than-expected fall weather — sunny and a comfortable 20 degrees — an organizer says the scene was filled with families enjoying the activities and local vendors.
Visitors got to go inside 15 historic sites in Niagara-on-the-Lake this past weekend to learn more about the stories of the past that have shaped this town’s history.
Early bird tickets for the Holiday House Tour, which will feature six of NOTL’s historic homes lavishly decorated for the holiday season, are $45 each until Nov. 8.
In the 75 years the Queenston Volunteer Firefighters Association has been active, it has cumulatively given around $175,000 back to the community through donations.
