The Niagara branch of the United Empire Loyalists got its name from Col. John Butler, a Loyalist who led a group to fight Americans on behalf of the British: “Were it not for him, there may not be a Canada.”

In 2014, Loblaws broke the world record for the most wheels cracked at the same time with 1,209 wheels. To defend its title, 1,800 wheels was the goal attempted last Saturday.

From stained glass and ceramic dishes to abstract paintings and self-portraits, last weekend offered art lovers and creatives a chance to explore the diversity of work made by Niagara-on-the-Lake’s artists.

Judy Kerr, one of the event organizers, made sure a section was designated for migrant workers at this year’s sale. She explained that last year, workers were invited to take freely from items left after the sale ended and realized their biggest need was fresh, warm clothes.

The fierce competition drew in a crowd watching on the edge of their seats at the Junior Niagara Smash tournament last weekend, hosted at the NOTL Tennis Club.

In light of recent political shifts between Canada and the U.S. — notably in the form of a trade war and discussion about Canada become America’s “51st state” — historical awareness may be more important than ever, said Fort George’s site supervisor.

The fair included several outdoor activities for kids, including face painting, mini-games and bounce houses. But the most exciting part was Crossroads principal Kate Fish in the dunk tank, as seen by the line of students waiting for their turn to make the perfect shot.

Artists and gardeners in the Chautauqua neighbourhood opened their homes and backyards to visitors this past weekend for the Chautauqua Art and Garden Tour, giving visitors an intimate view of their artistic worlds.

Across all age groups, the NOTL Soccer Club has around 400 players this year. The most popular age group is Jagger and Kade’s group, the Timbits, which has around 80 players.

The volunteers hope these events can bring awareness to the difficulty of finding a dog guide, both in the availability of dogs and the price of raising one.
