Dear editor:
The biggest risk to the future of NOTL is not who does or does not get elected to the next council; it is the elites in Old Town who are troublesome and who pose the greatest threat.
It has been proven as fact that, had it not been for the largely anonymous SORE group, the Parliament Oak site would have been developed as a beautiful infill residential neighbourhood, and the Ritz-Carlton site would have also had a nice, quiet residential subdivision integrated with the other carved-out developments that also once formed the infamous, decaying former Rand Estate property.
The fact that these little but negatively powerful NIMBY groups continue to pull strings and brainwash the rest of the peasants places NOTL in great peril.
SORE, for example, is seeking input through some crafty questionnaire requesting responses, under the veil of a vague, threatening tone, from the mayoral candidates.
This is actually a good test of character and leadership qualities. If any of the three candidates respond to this anonymous political entrapment attempt, they should automatically be disqualified from running for the top seat at council because they would be seen as bowing down to the few at the expense of the rest of the population in Glendale, Virgil, Queenston, St. Davids and the humble peoples of the rural areas.
The control game, quite frankly, is almost over, and SORE needs to go away for good, as does NOTLRA, which for some reason keeps bumbling along while censoring its members.
The good news is that every single one of the candidates seeking election this time around is equally naive and underqualified to effect the type of governance that has been chronically sought by the Old Town elites, and thankfully that should ensure the same type of performance in the future as in the recent past.
The other good and refreshing news is that when the new casino is up and running within the confines of the shiny new Ritz, I will be surrounded by like-minded individuals who will be having a great time at the craps tables in Old Town territory while the elites plan for yet another destined-to-fail coup d’état.
