It was the sight of legendary and lavish parties almost a century ago, and on Sept. 13, its history as a gathering place for the social scene of Niagara-on-the-Lake was revitalized.
Dozens came out to the historic McArthur Estate on John Street for the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum’s Heritage Garden Party, an opportunity for the museum to raise funds for its capital project and to spark interest in Niagara’s past as an idyllic summer getaway.
The McArthurs of today, Blair and Brenda McArthur, greeted guests at 3 p.m. as they entered the grounds of the property, located at 210 John St. E. It was originally built in the 1830s and became the hub of NOTL’s social scene in the 1930s.
Guests came dressed to the nines, some dressing up as historical figures who used to own the property, and enjoyed an afternoon of strolling the scenic garden, mixing and mingling, food and refreshments and music from a flute-harp-cello trio.
This was the second-ever Heritage Garden Party hosted by the museum, the first which took place last year at the historic Charlou.
