Dear editor:
It is both disappointing and frustrating to see that, after three years, Niagara-on-the-Lake council has failed to take meaningful action to address the ongoing issues surrounding outdoor pickleball courts in our community.
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in Canada, embraced by residents of all ages for its accessibility, health benefits and strong sense of community.
Yet despite its popularity, local players have been left without adequate facilities while council delays, defers and ultimately does nothing.
What is perhaps most troubling is the suggestion that residents simply travel to neighboring municipalities to play. This response is not only dismissive — it is insulting.
Residents of Niagara-on-the-Lake pay taxes and contribute to this community with the reasonable expectation that their recreational needs will be considered and supported. Redirecting them elsewhere sends a clear message that their interests are not a priority.
Other municipalities have recognized the value of investing in recreational infrastructure like pickleball courts, understanding that these amenities enhance quality of life, promote active living and foster community engagement. Niagara-on-the-Lake should be no different.
Council has had ample time to consult, plan and implement a solution that balances the needs of all residents. The continued inaction reflects a troubling lack of leadership and responsiveness.
It is time for council to stop deflecting responsibility and start delivering results. The residents of Niagara-on-the-Lake deserve better.
