Dear editor:
Letter-writer Phil Wilson (“Letter: Poilievre knows how to get things done“) asks how I came to the conclusion “that a large minority of Conservative voters support Donald Trump and also support annexation by the U.S.”
I based my statement on data from a Leger poll conducted between March 7 and March 10, 2025, and released on March 17. Leger reported that 33 per cent of Conservative voters still supported Trump and 9 per cent of Canadians want to become the 51st state.
A recent Angus Reid poll reported that 20 per cent (one in five!) of Conservatives would vote to join the U.S., contrasting with low single digits for supporters of other major parties. I apologize for not including this data in my original letter.
I suspect most readers will regard these figures for Conservative supporters as pretty “large minorities.”
I trust this answers Mr. Wilson’s question.
We have to invest a little time to uncover the facts.
