Students at Niagara College’s brewmaster program are inviting all enjoyers of craft beer to raise their goblets and toast to the finest ales at its medieval-themed beer festival.

Project Brew: Medieval Faire will take place at the college’s Niagara-on-the-Lake campus on Aug. 9 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., promising an evening of distinctive brews with Middle Ages festivities.

Tickets are $35 plus tax, which includes a sample glass, five tokens and an exclusive Project Brew collectible bandana.

Guests will be able to sample 19 student-crafted beers, to be judged by a panel of industry professionals, with a $4,500 scholarship prize for the top beer.

This event serves as the capstone project for students in the beer sales and promotions class, as part of the brewmaster and brewery operations program.

It allows fourth-semester students to showcase their brewing talents and creativity while applying th eskills and knowledge they’ve gained during their studies.

Some of the samplings that will be available to try on Aug. 9 include student Keiran Brown-MacFayden’s two creations “Irish Redpoll,” a classic Irish red with a touch of rye, and “Songbird” — one of the 19 brews in the competition — a blend of English ale and German lager.

“I wanted to introduce something new that nobody has tasted yet, and really show the range of flavours that beers can achieve,” said Brown-MacFayden, who is also one of two lead organizers of Project Brew this term.

The other lead organizer, student Cooper Kelly, has entered a beer called “Baby Dino” in the competition, which is inspired by the historical German beer style Mittelalter Alter Einbecker Bier, which no longer exists today — an appropriate tie-in to the festival’s medieval theme.

“Baby Dino is an exceptionally lightly carbonated beer with an enormous amount of malt character paired with traditional German hops and botanicals that would have been used back in the Middle Ages,” said Kelly.

A portion of the proceeds from Project Brew will support the brew competition’s Matt Soos Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of the late Matt Soos, a 2015 brewmaster program graduate.
