Originally a private residence, this building at 175 Queen St. was eventually transformed into the Niagara Cottage Hospital. At the time of the First World War, there was no hospital in Niagara-on-the-Lake, only private clinics that operated out of homes. After the devastation of the Spanish flu pandemic, the community realized it needed a permanent hospital. After a successful fundraising campaign, this house was converted into the Niagara Cottage Hospital in 1920. With six small wards, it cared for generations of local residents until 1951, when the new hospital opened on Wellington Street. Today, the building stands as a reminder of the community’s commitment to caring for one another.
