Dear editor:

I hope I’m not the only one put off by Mr. Slingerland’s dismissal of rookie politicians (“NOTL voters lay out priorities,” Sept. 10).

“Veteran councillors with working relations” implies an old boys’ club — a club found in all levels of politics and whose members I term “elected addicts.”

What you know can, and should be, more important than who you know.

The power of ideas and force of personality is needed to break through the stratification and cynicism that can set in among “veteran” politicians returning to office time and time again.

I disagree with Mr. Slingerland’s characterization of political newcomers and suggest that, if anything, term limits in municipal politics would be more constructive.
