Dear editor:

The letter from J. Richard Wright regarding confronting a deranged national leader is spot-on. As previous experience has revealed, the reliance on tariffs does not achieve an objective of engendering domestic production.

Of course there are other accompanying objectives, but the goals of balancing international trade through tariffs is illusory.

A tit-for-tat tariff war is not worth pursuing.

I suggest the federal government immediately pass a bill on natural resources depletion.

This would require payment to provinces and the feds for material such as potash and other resources being mined. The details of the rates would be a subtle for negotiation.

As a resource-rich country, this source of wealth could be key element in national planning.
