Letter: Town needs to keep tax hike below rate of inflation
Letter to the editor. File

Dear editor:

The decision to commence budget talks in the fall is a welcome step in the right direction, (“Plans for 2024 budget talks to start this fall – to avoid last year’s delays,” The Lake Report, Aug. 3).

However, those of us living in urban areas have just received a massive increase of more than 10 per cent to the town portion of our property taxes, well in excess of the highest inflation rate in decades.

Against this background surely the town proposal not to “increase taxes by more than 6.5 per cent” in 2024 should be unacceptable to all of us.

This would represent an increase in excess of double the current rate of inflation and more than many people can afford.

Instead I would respectfully suggest that council direct town leadership to keep the tax increase below the current rate of inflation.
