Letter: Tough to find consensus on rainbow crosswalk

Dear editor:

I have just read Derek Collins's Dec. 2 letter re: a rainbow crosswalk and see you published it with an editor's note, qualifying your newspaper's stand on the issue.

It's a bit unfair to say Mr. Collins could not or rather did not have any evidence to support his comments. However, in the next breath, you seem to imply that the results of the survey by the town's inclusivity committee (197 respondents, about one per cent of the populace) who supported a crosswalk, was acceptable.

Is it not possible or equitable, that Mr. Collins was questioning whether 99 per cent of the rest of the community may not necessarily have the same opinion and that this should be considered also?

To my knowledge, residents have never been asked for their opinion on whether a crosswalk is needed, or more importantly, where it should be located and to whom the cost of this crosswalk would fall.

It's very difficult to arrive at a consensus in this situation.

By the same token, Jordon Williams, has claimed that increased prosperity to NOTL would result if a crosswalk was installed for the LGBGT community. So far Mr. Williams has yet to qualify his unsubstantiated claim.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
