Fresh produce returns to Thwaites Farms’ roadside stand, now open daily with earlier hours to match Niagara’s appetite for local produce.

The Thwaites family-run farm stand at 1984 Townline Rd. began its summer season this week, offering locally grown asparagus, peaches and other crops daily.

Manager Nelson Thwaites confirmed the stand will operate seven days a week with earlier opening times to meet demand, aligning with peak harvest schedules.

“Being pretty good for a rainy day. People are excited for the first local crop of the season. We’ve had a good turnout here today,” said Thwaites.

This marks the stand’s second year at its current location, which offers better visibility for drivers. Hours run Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting.

The asparagus is grown at another Thwaites farm in the Simcoe area and shipped to Niagara-on-the-Lake nightly, which will dominate operations for the next eight weeks.

“We’re also pruning peaches right now, finishing planting new orchards, trellis and irrigation projects. But most of the people are on asparagus right now,” said Thwaites.

Seasonal workers bundle the vegetables overnight for morning sales.

“The plan is to be here seven days a week right through the summer till Labour Day weekend,” said Thwaites. Hours may be adjusted during severe weather.
