Nine residents at Radiant Care Pleasant Manor long-term care home are affected by an outbreak of Influenza A and gastrointestinal illness, said CEO Tim Siemens.

Seven residents have Influenza A, while two have gastrointestinal issues. No hospitalizations have been reported.

Preventative medicine is being given to unaffected residents.

Niagara Public Health declared the outbreak on Feb. 23 for gastrointestinal illness and Feb. 26 for Influenza A.

“Like all long-term care homes in Niagara, when Pleasant Manor’s long-term care home is declared by Niagara Public Health to be in outbreak, the plan Pleasant Manor follows is dictated by Niagara Public Health,” said Siemens.

This plan involves isolating affected residents, staff self-screening before shifts, universal masking, gowns, gloves and eye protection, enhanced hand hygiene, keeping residents in the home except for essential appointments and requiring visitors to wear surgical masks with additional gowns and gloves for those seeing an isolated resident.

The plan has been communicated to all long-term care residents, their families and visitors.

The home remains open to visitors, since typically, homes declared in outbreak do not go into lockdown, Siemens said.
