While the first weekend of May at the TASC Tulip Pick Farm saw heavy rain and a traffic jam cause hours of trouble for its staff and visitors, last Sunday brought the tulip fields sunny skies and a peaceful Mother’s Day.
TASC became an open-air art studio for families last Sunday to celebrate mothers among a sea of colour.
About 50 mothers and family members gathered at the “Pick, Paint and Picnic” event in Niagara-on-the-Lake, hosted by Once Upon a Picnic & Events owner Sarah Christensen, to learn watercolour painting, using their surroundings as the inspiration.
“We’re hoping to come back every year. It just is always such a nice event. This place is stunning,” said Christensen.
Local artist Lacie Williamson led the painting session, guiding attendees through a simple yet elegant tulip painting.
“I try to teach people how to create something in a way that gives them individuality with their painting but also allows them to have fun,” said Williamson. “Everyone today understood the assignment. They came with an open mind.”
Simone Dorie attended the event with her mother, Jill, wanting to create lasting memories rather than just giving traditional Mother’s Day gifts.
“A memory sometimes is better than just a gift,” said Simone Dorie.
Rachel McMullen and her mother, Nicole, also enjoyed their first visit to the farm and their first watercolour painting experience.
“Quality time with my mom was the best part,” said Rachel McMullen.
Sunday’s successful event contrasted sharply with TASC’s troubled opening weekend on May 3, where heavy rains created mud and traffic chaos.
Since the rainstorm on May 3, TASC has spent $30,000 on adding mulch and hay to their parking lot to prevent cars from getting stuck in the mud again.
Not a worry last weekend, as clear skies and improved conditions brought thousands of visitors eager to enjoy the picturesque setting at its best.
“It’s such a great experience to bring people together. You’ve got a beautiful space, you’ve got a beautiful day. You can’t ask for much better,” said Williamson.
