New COVID outbreak on second floor of NOTL nursing home
The 15 day outbreak at Niagara Long Term Care is finally over as of Sept. 6. Somer Slobodian

Niagara Long Term Care Residence is in the middle of another COVID-19 outbreak.

The outbreak was declared on Aug. 22 and is contained to the second floor, an official said. Three residents and seven employees tested positive for the virus.

All affected staff and residents are doing well and experiencing mild cold-like symptoms or are asymptomatic, said Chris Poos, executive director of the Wellington Street home.

The facility has continued with a number of infection prevention and control protocols, including masking, daily rapid testing for staff and visitors and active screening, Poos said.

Once COVID-19 is confirmed in the home, staff then use N-95 respirator masks and full personal protective equipment if caring for a COVID-positive patient, he said in an email.

They isolate residents to their rooms and encourage them to wear a mask if they can while moving around the facility.

“We always look to find the best possible balance between (infection prevention) protocol and our resident’s quality of life,” said Poos.
