Man dead, woman in hospital after being found on side of NOTL road
Niagara Regional Police are looking for the motorist who fled the scene after striking a cyclist in NOTL on Thursday evening. File

A man is dead and a woman is in hospital after being discovered together on the side of a road in Niagara-on-the-Lake early Friday morning.

Police said the vacationing couple from Hamilton, both in their 70s, had been found in medical distress on the ground at the side of the roadway.

Police arrived at about 12:50 a.m. to the area of Wellington and Byron streets to assist Niagara EMS paramedics.

Despite resuscitative efforts by paramedics, the man was pronounced deceased. The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

Police said they believe the two were out for a walk at the time and that while the investigation is in its early stages, no foul play is suspected. There is no evidence to support they were struck by a car.
