The City of Niagara Falls has issued a ban on all open-air burning in the city.

This ban comes in wake of the events on July 8 at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Lavender fest, in which a fire burned and damaged multiple vehicles.

According to a press release from the city and the Niagara Falls Fire Department the ban pertains to all open-air burning, including cooking fires, consumer fireworks and other types of burning.

“This past weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake we saw how fast fire can spread in dry conditions,” said Jim Boutilier, Fire Chief. “We do not want to see anyone’s safety or property at risk from a fire during this period.”

Barbecuing and other gas appliances are permitted under the ban.

Anyone not obeying the ban can be charged under municipal by-laws or the Ontario Fire Code and could face fines ranging anywhere from $2,000-$50,000.
