Christmas Star: NOTL snowbird photographer captures stunning photo of Jupiter, Saturn

NOTL’er Sonja Schindeler and her husband Rick Hrga are lucky to spend their winters in Rancho Santa Fe California (just north of San Diego). With Tuesday night being very clear on the west coast, they had the opportunity to see the “Christmas Star” which was the closest conjunction of the planets Jupiter and Saturn since the 17th century. Jupiter is 890 million kilometers away with Saturn being an additional 730 million kms, and yet you can still see 4 of Jupiter’s moons (look below Saturn for the 4th!). To get a sense of how far away these stars really are, the moon shot was taken the same night with the same lens. (Sonja Schindeler)
