Good food and fun at United Church bazaar

The atmosphere was friendly, the soup was hot and people were welcoming at the annual St. Davids-Queenston United Church bazaar on Saturday.

For Niagara Falls resident Susan Cote, who regularly attends the church, the best part of the bazaar was the bake table, which offered strawberry muffins, shepherd’s pies, fruit pies, chicken pot pies and more.

“We all wish (church) luck and they always do a great job,” she said.

In addition to a variety of knitted items, used jewelry and china, there were also “attic treasures” and books for sale.

“The number of interesting items they have for sale you won’t find if you just go to Walmart,” said one of the bazaar's visitors Maggie Davis. “They’re little treasures people donate throughout the years and then part with when the time comes.”

Serving lunch and helping clean up the tables were 15-year-old Michaela Overweg and 13-year-old Kennedy Horbach.

Overweg, who attends Laura Secord Secondary School, is no stranger to helping at the bazaar. She said she's been lending a hand at the event for two or three years now.

“I enjoy it a lot. I enjoy volunteer work,” she told The Lake Report.

For Horbach, who goes to St. Davids Public School, it was the first time helping out, and it’s been “lots of fun.”

Shanty Bay resident Emese Borbely swung by the church after dropping her husband Sandie off at a workshop in town. She said people at the church were kind and, as she didn't have enough cash, someone even offered their money to her to help pay.

“It’s a wonderful atmosphere and kind people,” she said. “People here are so welcoming to strangers.”

Another Niagara Falls resident Valerie Zuk, who grew up in St. Davids, also praised the event, noting how welcoming and warm everybody was.

“Anybody who comes here always wants to come back,” she said.

After it was over, Judy Kerr said the bazaar was successful and they made “a very nice profit.”

“The church is very active and the women are amazing,” Kerr said.

The money raised will not only cover church expenses, but will also be donated to Cave Springs Camp, Red Roof Retreat, various women's charities and shelters, and for the Hurricane Dorian relief efforts.
