Exploring History: Military ball, 1890s
Officers in gleaming uniforms and ladies in shimmering gowns filled this ballroom with music, laughter and, of course, the ever-important exchange of knowing glances.

Niagara-on-the-Lake once played host to a most splendid military ball in the 1890s, at the elegant home of the Woodruff family in St. Davids or at the distinguished Queen’s Royal Hotel. Officers in gleaming uniforms and ladies in shimmering gowns filled this ballroom with music, laughter and, of course, the ever-important exchange of knowing glances. Whispers of secret admirations and subtle intrigues danced as freely as the couples themselves, making for an evening of style, decorum and quiet fascination, captured here for the delight of all who gaze upon it.
