This wood engraving by John Charles Dent (1841-1881) portrays the popular Queenston monument which honours Maj.-Gen. Isaac Brock for his leadership and contributions to the war effort in 1812. It also commemorates the first major engagement of the war to happen in Niagara. The War of 1812 was a key step towards building our nationhood. Not only did we defend our borders from our neighbours to the south and distinguish ourselves from them, but we also demonstrated to Britain that the settlers here in the colony had true grit to defend our homes. We are fortunate in Niagara-on-the-Lake to have many of the most rare and unique 1812 collections in Canada at our very own museum, some of which are currently on display. We are open daily throughout the year, so make sure to come in and have a peek.
