Local jazz duo launches festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Husband and wife duo from Niagara are bringing their St. Catharines jazz festival to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Peter Shea and Juliet Dunn, also known as the Shea D Duo, have run the Twilight Jazz Series going on eight years in St. Catharines and will be launching it in NOTL this year.

“We perform as artists ourselves a lot in Niagara-on-the-Lake but our Twilight Jazz Series has always had its home in St. Catharines,” said Dunn in a press release.

“We want to keep the series going in St. Catharines as it has grown and is very popular but we know that there are a lot of jazz fans in NOTL that don’t necessarily want to make the drive there and back. We ‘get it’ so we’re bringing the series to them to Old Town”

With a total of 16 shows from November to June, in NOTL and St. Catharines, there will be plenty of opportunities for Jazz fans to experience the festival.

The St. Catharines shows will be held on Nov. 4, Dec. 2, Jan. 6, Feb. 10, March 3, April 7, May 5, and June 2 at the Mahtay Cafe Lounge on 241 St. Paul St..

For the NOTL shows Dunn and Shea are teaming up with Corks Wine Bar and Eatery and will be turning their upstairs theatre into an intimate jazz club for the shows, including this Sunday, featuring Cinnamon Jones.

Other performers include the legendary jazz drummer Graham Lear, local Niagara jazz musicians Randy Stirtzinger, Stu Mac and Ashley St. Pierre, Dr. Jazz, and the Jazz Bugs.

The NOTL shows are being held on Nov. 18, Dec. 16, Jan. Feb. 17, April 21, May 19 and June 16 in the Corks Playhouse Theatre.

“It’s a very exciting season and we’re really looking forward to having a monthly ‘jazz club’ in Niagara-on-the-Lake, something we’ve always wanted to do,” said Dunn.
