The seventh annual Chippawa Polar Bear Dip was Saturday and brought in volunteers from Niagara Falls Fire and St. John’s Ambulance.

More than 30 participants registered for the dip in the icy water, which doubled as a costume contest.

Each year, the Dip raises funds for the Chippawa Public Dock Committee.

This year, with an an extreme cold warning in Niagara — with temperatures up to -18 degrees Celsius with a wind chill of -30 degrees Celsius — many other dips around the region were cancelled.

To help combat the cold, there were heated trailers available and participants seemed to be grateful, one saying it’s the “best Polar Bear Dip” yet.

The dip was followed by an after-party which included food, door prizes, prizes for the costume contest participants and for those who raised the most money.

The winners were Tammy Frakking (first place), John Thompson (second place) and Tania Lutz (third place).

Frakking raised $400, the most money of the day.

Last year brought in over 70 participants for the Polar Bear Dip and approximately seven participated in the costume contest.
