Dear editor:
Throughout this election, residents have asked about taxes, tourism, developers, flooding, roundabouts and many other community concerns. Collectively, these concerns raise something fundamental: trust in the people we elect to council.
While following the candidates forums, I have been hoping to hear about what specific accountability measures the candidates will commit to personally undertaking, and publicly sharing throughout their term, in order to prove to residents that they are consistently placing citizens first.
I am less interested in hearing about “why” candidates believe we should trust them, which is usually more about assurances (something along the lines of “trust me I’m trustworthy,” and “I’ll also listen and be transparent”).
Instead, I am much more interested in what candidates have said about “how” they will prove to the community they are trustworthy through specific publicly verifiable actions.
It all boils down to who do we trust the most — and least.
