A solo exhibition exploring the natural world through painting opens Thursday at the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre.
“Contemplation in Nature,” featuring the work of artist Sherry Park, runs Oct. 1 to 25 in the Joyner Gallery at the Niagara Pumphouse.
The exhibition features paintings inspired by Park’s observations and experiences in nature. Primarily a figurative painter, Park has increasingly incorporated landscape into her work, describing the process of translating what she sees onto canvas as meditative.
“I enjoy the process of painting, from observation to putting on canvas,” said Park in a media release. “It is calming and meditative.”
Born in Korea and raised in the Toronto area, Park studied drawing and painting at the Ontario College of Art, now OCAD University. During her final year, she studied off-campus in Florence, Italy.
Park is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists, the Ontario Society of Artists and the Colour and Form Society. Her work has been featured in solo, group and juried exhibitions in Canada and internationally, and she has received numerous awards and honours.
“Sherry’s paintings capture a sense of quiet reflection,” said Rima Boles, Pumphouse director. “The works invite viewers to consider their own connection to the world around them.”
The public can meet Park at an opening reception Sunday, Oct. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m., with remarks at 2:30 p.m. The reception will include refreshments and an opportunity to connect with the artist and members of the local arts community.
The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is at 247 Ricardo St.
