One of the most demanding annual tests of golf was played at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club on Friday.

The Matrimonial Tournament, which pairs up member couples in a handicapped, alternate shot contest, is one of the most adventuresome outings each year.

That’s because the men, who can be prone to hitting the ball into all sorts of trouble, tend to do exactly that under the pressure of such a prestigious competition.

The result is that the women, who generally hit the ball straight up the middle of the fairway, can find themselves playing from areas of the course into which they’ve never ventured before.

But, thankfully, it’s all in fun.

This year’s winners were Carolyn and Drew Porter, whose net 65 score edged out two-time defending champs Janice and Jim McMacken, who had a net 68.

In third place were Glen and Cathy Murray, with a net 70.

Meanwhile, about 30 club members aged 80-plus competed for the Legends Cup last week.

The competition was close and the winners were Mike Eagen and Richard Sammons.

In regular Woofs league play, Al Kavanagh and Jim Meszaros shot 39 for top spot. Alan Robb was low net with 33.

Ron Planche was closest to the pin on #4 and Ken Willms’ birdie on #7 earned him the hidden hole prize.

In other play this past week, Sue Sherk led the Tuesday women’s nine-hole league with 47, one better than Deborah Williams.

Carolyn Cochrane and Sharron Marlow were next with 50.

Ellen Smith had the longest drive on #2 and Suzanne Watson was longest on #8. Sally Miller was closest to the pin on #4.

Louise Robitaille was tops in the women’s 18-hole league with 88. Carroll Baker and Martha Cruikshank tied for second at 91 while Diana Dimmer was third with 93.

Other winners: Yolanda Henry (closest to pin on #4), Dimmer (longest putt on #7), Robitaille (longest drive #12) and Cruikshank (closest to the pin in two on #18).

Monday’s business women’s league was rained out again but Thursday’s men’s league managed to avoid the same fate.

James Grigjanis-Meusel and Drew Porter were the day’s top shooters with 2-over 38. Jon Schmidt won low net (31) and Porter was second (32).

Dean McCann bombed the longest drive on #1 and Doug Hernder made the longest putt on #5.

Closest to the pin sharpshooters were Brock Samson (#4) and Stephen Warboys (#9).

Gross skins ($35) went to Ricky Watson for birdies on #6 and #8, and to Tom Elltoft for his bird on #3.

Net skins ($94) were claimed by Jon Schmidt (#5) and Jim Garrett (#7).
