As warm weather draws people outside to reconnect with forests, gardens and shorelines, a new exhibition at the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is celebrating the emotional bond between people and the natural world.
Nature’s Heartbeat, featuring paintings by Hamilton artist Lynda Flanagan, will be on display in the Joyner Gallery from July 2 to 26.
Working primarily in acrylic, Flanagan uses expressive brushwork and layered applications of paint to create landscapes that examine themes of respect, resilience, renewal and humanity’s shared dependence on nature.
“Humans and nature share deep roots and are bonded through mutual reliance and a need for balance,” Flanagan said in a statement. “Through my interpretations of nature and the world’s natural elements, I hope to bridge my journey and joy of nature with that of the viewer.”
The exhibition’s opening reception will be held Sunday, July 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet the artist, enjoy refreshments and hear remarks from Flanagan beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Flanagan, who holds an honours bachelor of fine arts degree from McMaster University, paints full-time from her home studio in Hamilton. Her work reflects a lifelong appreciation for the natural environment and its ability to inspire contemplation, connection and renewal.
Admission to both the exhibition and opening reception is free. The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is located at 247 Ricardo St.
