Fatal two-vehicle crash in NOTL may have been caused by medical episode

One person is dead following a two-vehicle collision in Niagara-on-the-Lake that happened Wednesday morning, police say.

Niagara Regional Police arrived on the scene of a head-on collision at 6:45 a.m. on Jan. 21 in the area of Portage Road near Stanley Avenue.

One of the drivers was found without vital signs — Niagara Emergency Medical Services began life-saving measures, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second driver experienced non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency medical services transported that driver to a local hospital.

Police say “early information” suggests the deceased driver “suffered a medical episode while operating a motor vehicle.”

The Collision Reconstruction Unit has taken over the investigation.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service at (905) 688-4111, option 3, extension 1009769.
