The Niagara-on-the-Lake Tennis Club opened its 2026 tournament season with 22 doubles teams competing in two divisions on June 26 and 27.
The championship matches were held June 27 at the Memorial Park courts, where club members gathered to watch the finalists compete.
In the A Division final, Gerry McIlhone and Karen Rhind defeated Don Pozojevic and Leslie Gottschalk 6-2, 6-4.
McIlhone and Rhind controlled the match with aggressive net play, timely poaching and consistent shot-making.
The B Division championship required a match tiebreak, with Scott McGregor and Dorothy Booth defeating Trish Spagnol and Steve Moore 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.
After dropping the opening set, McGregor and Booth battled back to win the second before taking the deciding tiebreaker. Long rallies and strong defensive play kept the match close until McGregor’s serving and Booth’s determination helped secure the victory.
