Coun. Andrew Niven is running for Niagara-on-the-Lake council this fall, seeking voters’ support for the first time since he was appointed to the role nearly two years ago.
Niven announced his candidacy Tuesday, saying he wants to continue the work he began after joining council in October 2024.
“It has been an incredible privilege to serve the residents of Niagara-on-the-Lake,” Niven said in a campaign statement.
“Over the past two years, I have approached every decision with one goal in mind: to do what is in the long-term best interest of our community. I am excited for the opportunity to continue that work.”
Niven did not run in 2022. Councillors appointed him in October 2024 to fill the seat left vacant when Nick Ruller resigned.
He previously sought a council seat in 2018 but was not elected.
This year’s election will give voters their first opportunity to decide whether Niven should remain at the council table.
Niven said his priorities include responsible government, transparent decisions, careful planning, fiscal responsibility and infrastructure improvements. He also pledged to support agriculture and local businesses while protecting the town’s character.
“Niagara-on-the-Lake is unlike anywhere else,” he said.
“We are fortunate to call home a community known around the world for its history, agriculture, wineries, natural beauty, and vibrant neighbourhoods. As we continue to grow, we must ensure that every decision reflects our community’s values while protecting the qualities that make this place so special.”
Niven has worked in NOTL’s tourism and wine sectors and has held leadership roles related to tourism, business and economic development.
He is currently director of marketing and hospitality at Konzelmann Estate Winery and previously chaired the Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce and Tourism NOTL and Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
He said local decisions should be based on evidence and public input.
“I don’t believe leadership is about having all the answers,” Niven said. “It’s about listening, asking thoughtful questions, and making decisions based on facts — not politics. Residents deserve a council that is respectful, accountable, and focused on the future.”
Niven said he plans to speak with residents about their priorities throughout the campaign.
“I have worked hard to be available, approachable, and engaged,” he said. “Whether discussing planning, infrastructure, community services, or economic development, I have always believed that every resident deserves to be heard.”
Council chose Niven during a closed-door meeting instead of holding a byelection or appointing Allan Bisback, the runner-up in the 2022 election. Councillors Gary Burroughs and Sandra O’Connor opposed Niven’s appointment and favoured appointing Bisback.
