Mewburn Road to be closed, again, until end of May

Link between NOTL, Niagara Falls to close until May 30

When a stretch of road connecting Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake was closed for 10 years, what’s another month or so?

Concession 6/Mewburn Road is going to be closed from April 25 to May 30 for reconstruction.

The roadway’s narrowness means it needs to be closed entirely to facilitate the work and shorten the time the road will be closed, the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake says.

The work is the continuation of a project that started last year. The reconstruction was delayed last September because of what was called at the time “unforeseen site conditions,” including issues with the bedrock, road slopes and unevenness of the road surface.

The contractor for the project, Walker Construction, was forced to redesign one of the road’s supporting walls after it found the terrain was less stable than it had originally foreseen.

The stretch of road in question runs between the intersection of Mewburn to just north of the railway bridge — itself the subject of a closure that lasted a decade as CN Rail and the haggled over cost sharing for the bridge replacement.

The bridge reopened in November 2019 with the $5-million cost shared between CN, the town and Niagara Region.
