On a sunny afternoon along Lakeshore Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake, friends of Joanne Young gathered at Sykes Landscaping to honour her memory with a heartfelt tree planting ceremony.
Members of the NOTL Horticultural Society joined the tribute, reflecting Young’s deep connection to the local gardening community.
Sykes Landscaping hosted the event, providing food for guests as they shared stories and memories. The highlight of the ceremony was the planting of a honey locust tree — chosen for its graceful form and resilience — as a living tribute to Joanne’s spirit.
Guests were invited to write personal messages on slips of paper, which were lovingly attached to the tree. Each note added a layer of meaning, turning the tree into a symbol of collective remembrance.
Attendees also took part in the planting itself, placing shovels of soil around the root ball to help settle the tree into its new home.
Young’s mother, Berna Young, and sister Yvonne Yarker were present for the ceremony, adding a personal touch to the gathering. Berna Young helped water the tree, closing the ceremony.
