The Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum’s annual Heritage Garden Party returns Sept. 12, with this year’s celebration taking on a distinctly nautical theme.

Now in its third year, the party has become a highly anticipated get-together for the town’s heritage and history enthusiasts and is a key fundraiser for the NOTL Museum.

Proceeds from the event support the museum’s programs, exhibitions and ongoing plans to renovate and grow its space.

The garden party will once again be held at one of NOTL’s most distinctive heritage homes — the Georgian-style residence at 83 Gage St., owned by Peter Howe and Judy McLeod.

Located in the heart of Old Town, the property was purchased by Howe in the 1980s and is remembered by many as the longtime home of his parents, Margherita and Norm Howe.

First surveyed in 1791, the property has deep roots in Niagara’s history.

Its original owner was William Claus, a key figure in British-Indigenous diplomacy as deputy superintendent for Indian Affairs. The home is believed to have been built around 1830 by his son, John Johnson Claus.

Over the years, the house has passed through the hands of several notable residents, including James Lockhart, a merchant, banker, ship owner and secretary-treasurer of the Niagara Harbour and Dock Company.

Guests at this year’s party are encouraged to wear their best nautical attire — a tribute to Lockhart and the historic Niagara Harbour and Dock Company.

The celebration will include nods to Niagara-on-the-Lake’s marine heritage, from steamboats to sailboats.

“Community sponsorships and creative partnerships are the heart of this event,” said committee chair Betty Knight in a media release.

“When you have enthusiastic partners, planning an event like this is less a chore and more of a joy.”

The afternoon will feature historical characters, music by JADE Entertainment, traditional garden games like quoits and food and drink from local supporters.

Niagara Finest Hotels will provide the food, Konzelmann Winery will offer wine and sparkling, and Niagara College will contribute a signature cocktail.

The party will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $125, with a tax receipt of $70 available. They are limited and selling quickly, the museum says.
