Parliament Oak sold

The District School Board of Niagara has sold Parliament Oak.

A release from the DSBN today said:

“Following a decision by the Board of Trustees, the DSBN has agreed to sell the Parliament Oak property at 325 King Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) to Liberty Sites (3) Ltd. The deal is valued at $4.925 million dollars.

“This is good news for DSBN students,” explained Dale Robinson, Chair of the Board. “The proceeds of this sale will be used to upgrade our school facilities and best serve our students.”

Board Vice-Chair Kevin Maves stated that the Board is pleased with the manner in which the sale was conducted, noting it was done in accordance with all broader public sector guidelines.

According to its website, Liberty Sites Ltd. is one of Canada’s leading private suburban business park developers, with properties in Quebec and British Columbia. “

The news comes after the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake failed to negotiate a deal with the DSBN.

A town of NOTL release from November says:

“In early October, Town staff were verbally advised by DSBN staff that the DSBN would consider an offer from the Town if it was submitted within 30 days, however the offer needed to include three specific conditions required by the DSBN.

In response, Town Council submitted an unconditional offer, above the asking price, which was again refused by the DSBN.”

The conditions required were that the town of NOTL not sell the property, that the town ensures the property be used as a community hub and that the town ensures the property not be used for private education.

The town of NOTL would not meet those requirements.

In 2015 the DSBN sold the property of the now closed Niagara District Secondary School for $1.67 million. A similar message was made by the town of NOTL that it was important the property remained in the community.

The town then sold the property to a private school.

A community demonstration to communicate the importance of keeping the property in the community was held in December 2017.

The town of NOTL made a private offer on the property but were outbid.
