NOTL fraud suspect arrested

A man has been charged with multiple counts of fraud which allegedly occurred in the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

In April of 2017, staff of a NOTL hotel reported the man had been using stolen credit card information to purchase gift cards, gift certificates and merchandise, police say.

On Monday, police arrested and charged 27-year-old Shakib Gharibzada of Richmond Hill with two counts of unauthorized use of a credit card; four counts of fraud under $5,000; one count of fraud over $5,000; one count of laundering proceeds of crime; and one count of failing to comply with probation.

Investigation determined Gharibzada had dined at the restaurant before using hotel services and stolen credit card information to purchase and print gift certificates, which were then used to obtain gift cards.

The gift cards were subsequently used to pay for the restaurant bill and other merchandise.

Gharibzada was held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines and was released on a recognizance.
