Woman comes forward about sexual assault

On Monday, police say a woman attended the Welland police station to report a belated sexual assault.

The woman reported that on Saturday at approximately 12:30 a.m. she was walking alone in the area of Merritt Rd. and Eastman Gateway in Welland when a dark coloured pickup truck with a plow and blue flashing lights pulled up to her and stopped.

A lone male exited the truck and, after a brief conversation, sexually assaulted the woman, leaving the scene in his vehicle when the driver of a white transport truck stopped and intervened.

The suspect was last seen heading westbound on Merritt Rd.

The description of the suspect is limited, described as a white male, approximately 40-years-old, about five-foot-eleven, with a muscular build. He was wearing a dark baseball cap and had an odour of alcohol.

Police are looking for any information regarding this incident and are seeking to identity the male who intervened in the assault.

Anyone with information can contact police at 905-688-4111, ext. 5100.
