The number of deaths on OPP-patrolled roads, waterways and trails went down in 2018, compared to 2017.
However, the number in other categories, such as transport trucks or property damage collisions, went up.
The data is preliminary and reflects OPP-patrolled jurisdictions only, said OPP’s press release.

Roads:
2018:
296 fatal crashes in which 333 people died.
2017:
304 fatal crashes and 343 deaths.
While the number of deadly crashes was lower in 2018, the number of personal injury and property damage collisions increased last year.
2018:
72,060 collisions.
2017:
68,782 collisions.
Road deaths because of “Big Four” categories, except for speed-related deaths, also decreased last year. “Big Four” refers to the four main factors that cause the majority of deaths on the roads. Last year also had the lowest number of inattentive-related deaths in almost 10 years, OPP reports.

2018:
7,674 collisions (55 of them were fatal incidents and 1,142 of them resulted in personal injury crashes).
2017:
7,287 collisions (79 fatal incidents and 1,253 personal injury crashes).
Motorcycles:
2018:
36 people (speed and losing control are the top contributing factors).
2017:
48 people (top factors are improper turning and alcohol impairment).
Off-road:
Alcohol has been a factor in 42 per cent of off-road vehicle deaths over the past 10 years.
2018:
19 people (10 people were not wearing a helmet and alcohol was a factor in eight of the deaths).
2017:
22 people.
Marine:
Over the past 10 years, 85 per cent of those who died in boating incidents were not wearing a life jacket or a personal flotation device (PFD). Falling overboard and capsized vessels are the top two causes in boating deaths.
2018:
24 people died. (22 of them were not wearing a PFD).
2017:
31 people.
Snowmobile:
Over the past 10 years, 37 per cent of snowmobile deaths happened on frozen waterways. The top factor in snowmobile deaths is driving too fast for the conditions.
2017/18:
13 people killed in snowmobile accidents.
