The 24 voices of the Edison Singers will fill St. Mark’s Church with song, performing “Choral Mystics” on Saturday, May 24 at 4 p.m.
Canadian choral conductor Noel Edison formed the ensemble in 2019 and has performed in Niagara-on-the-Lake 10 times since then.
Edison is particularly pleased that St. Mark’s music director, Michael Bloss, will provide keyboard accompaniment, he stated in a media release.
The “Choral Mystics” concert spans almost 400 years of choral music.
“I chose our first piece — a work by Palestrina from the late 16th century — as a kind of dedication to our new pope, Leo XIV,” said Edison in the release.
“Palestrina composed the piece for a new pope in his era. It is absolutely gorgeous, wonderful music that people love to hear.”
The remaining works will include pieces by more contemporary composers — Grammy-winning Eric Whitacre and National Medal of Arts recipient Morten Lauridsen.
“Although these are contemporary composers, the music will be quite traditional. Very lush and traditionally styled.”
Later this year, the Edison Singers will produce, under the Naxos label, a recording of the Fauré and Duruflé “Requiems,” which are scheduled for performance in Niagara-on-the-Lake in fall 2026.
Edison has been recording for the Naxos label for almost 30 years, releasing some 19 CDs over that period. He has received several Juno and Grammy nominations.
St. Mark’s Church is located at 41 Byron St. in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
