Summer’s gone, fall has arrived and that means the competitive leagues are wrapping up at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club.

But there’s still time for some late-season heroics on the links.

As we reported last week, NOTL native Quinton Spagnol had a hole-in-one on the fourth hole en route to his “best score ever,”  a 1-over 37.

He followed that up in style his next time out with another 37. But the real story is in how he did it.

His total was good for second low gross, behind club champion Ricky Watson, who had a 1-under 35 (with birdies on #3 and #8 and a bogey on #5).

Spagnol bogeyed #2 and #3, so he was 2-over when he got to the tee on the par-4 seventh.

The lakeside hole is a dogleg left to a small, two-tiered green, with bunkers in front and out-of-bounds along the back. It’s easy to slide right across the green and land in the penalty area.

It plays to about 300 yards total but a grove of large, mature trees guard the dogleg. If you’re a big hitter, you can try to bomb it over the trees and hope for the best.

That’s what Spagnol did.

He unleashed “a straight ball for once,” clearing all the trees, bouncing on the green and rolling to the back fringe, about 50 feet from the hole.

Then he stepped up and sank the putt for an incredible eagle 2 to get back to even-par. With a bogey on the ninth hole, he nailed his second straight 37.

The eagle also earned him a $60 net skin.

There are a couple of weeks of men’s league play left. We’ll see what other fireworks are in store.

Other winners: Justin Reimer (longest drive on #1), Glenn Young (closest to the pin on #4), Noel Morris (longest putt made on #5) and Kevin Jackson (closest to the pin on #9).

Earl Shore and Ron Newman were low net winners with 31.

Birdies earned Ted Carmichael (#6) and Doug Hernder (#7) a $55 gross skin. Patrick Leeder (#2) and Jackson (#9) also won net skins.

In Monday’s business women’s league, Brandi Currie’s 45 was the top score. Other winners were: Angelique Magi (longest drive on #1), Diana Hall (closest to the 150 on #2) and Terry Huisman (sank the longest putt on #7).

May Chang was closest to the pin on #4 and Kim Breakspeare was closest in two shots on #9.

The NOTL club hosted its annual member-guest tourney last week, a 27-hole format featuring nine holes each of best ball, alternate shot and a team scramble.

Flight 1 winners were NOTL’s Ricky Watson and Andrew Bolinger of the LPGA International course while the flight 2 winners were NOTL’s Stein Hansen and Tony DeSanctis of Nottawasaga Golf Resort.

In a two-hole playoff to determine an overall winner, Hansen sank a four-foot birdie putt on the last hole to edge out Watson and Bolinger.
