Residents of Niagara-on-the-Lake are dealing with the aftermath of a torrential downpour Monday night: several homes, roads and fields in the town are flooding, with the worst of it happening in rural residential areas and farmlands.

Six inches of rain fell overnight from 11:30 p.m. last night to 4:30 a.m. this morning, overwhelming the municipality’s stormwater systems. The Town of NOTL says its drainage systems were already under pressure from saturated ground conditions, high lake levels and full waterways.

The town says since the early morning hours, crews have been working to operate pumping stations, install road closure barricades and respond to flooding concerns and will be outside all day to monitor the conditions.

It notes in its media release that residents have had questions about the municipality’s stormwater infrastructure. It says NOTL’s council has made “significant investments” in stormwater management, municipal drain maintenance, culvert replacements, stormwater pond rehabilitaiton and long-term infrastructure planning.

“While these investments improve the capacity, reliability and resilience of the town’s drainage system, no municipal stormwater system can completely prevent flooding during rainfall events of this magnitude,” the statement read.

“As extreme weather events become more frequent and intense, the town will continue to assess infrastructure performance and prioritize future investments to strengthen the community’s resilience over the long term.”

This is far from the first time large-scale flooding has been an issue in Niagara-on-the-Lake after severe rainstorms: a pair of significant storms in the summer of 2024 saw flash floods in areas of greater NOTL, overwhelming sewers, drains, culverts, ditches, storm ponds and streams.

The Lake Report documented the flooding several residents experienced in their homes and on their properties two years ago, as well as the response from the municipality to questions about its overwhelmed stormwater infrastructure, in its Summer of the Flood series.
