They came to NOTL from around Niagara, across Ontario and around the world to mark the bi-annual Women’s Invitational Golf tourney last week.
Fittingly, the theme was Around the World and members of the organizing committee were decked out in airline flight attendants’ gear while golfers sported attire from various countries and cultures across the globe.
Months of preparation and planning go in to organizing the popular tournament, held Tuesday at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club.
Participants were quick to congratulate the organizing committee of Carolyn Porter, Judy Mantle, Cathy Murray, Tracey Peters, Gayle Tanner and Cathy Taylor for all their hard work.
Despite dire heat warnings, the weather co-operated, supplying just enough of a breeze to keep conditions comfortable.
But on the links, the competition was heated as Shelley Lothian (Peninsula Lakes) and Jayne Chalmers (Hamilton) combined to win the low gross championship by a single shot.
Their score of 4-over 76 edged out the duo of Louise Robitaille (NOTL) and Betty Divok (Bridgewater), who shot 77.
The Sawmill team of Carolyn May and Karen Sabzali placed third with a score of 84.
Players also competed in three flights for best low net score (gross score minus handicaps).
In flight 1, NOTL’s Lisa Allen teamed with Pam Kilmer (Rattlesnake Point) for a net of 66 to finish ahead of Rockway’s Carol Cort and Lisa Petro (68). May and Sabzali were third (69).
In flight 2, Pierrette Crawford and Suzanne Cousineau of Rolling Meadows were tops with 67. Barbara Hastings (NOTL) and Kristen Murphy (Rosedale)  were second with 69, while Rockway’s Phyllis Bennett and Marianne Boman finished third at 71.
NOTL’s Judy Mantle and Janice McMacken combined for 67 and came out on top in flight 3 via retrogression.
Next were Shelby Leeder (NOTL) and Cathy Backman (Midland), also with 67, and Gayle Tanner (NOTL) and Kim Ward (Port Perry) with 69.
While the weather co-operated for the Invitational, most of the NOTL club’s weekly leagues weren’t so lucky.
Smoky skies from Canadian wildfires cancelled last Thursday’s men’s league yet again. That makes five consecutive weeks that weather problems have intervened.
And this past Tuesday’s rains washed out the women’s nine- and 18-hole leagues, as well as the men’s Woofs league.
Monday’s business women’s league was more fortunate.
Cheryl Yamamoto was tops with a gross score of 44. Other winners were: Petra Browning (longest drive on #1), Gulshan Lalani (closest to the 150 marker on #2), Tracey Peters (longest putt on #7).
Cynthia Parks was closest to the pin on #4 and Suzanne Watson was closest to the pin in two shots on #9.
