Niagara College will host a series of Black History Month events at its Niagara-on-the-Lake campus throughout February.

The Niagara-on-the-Lake campus will host two events. On Feb. 17, the college will present “Words That Heal,” a slam poetry workshop hosted by Cassandra Muileboom, described as a “writer, speaker, and qualifying clinical psychoanalyst with a passion for poetry.”

The college said the workshop will create a “welcoming, nonjudgmental environment” where participants can express themselves.

On Feb. 24, Rochelle Bush, a recipient of the Niagara College Distinguished Alumni Award and owner of Tubman Tours Canada, will speak about “abolitionist activity, notable Underground Railroad freedom seekers and important structures all of which are featured on Niagara’s Freedom Trail.”

These events will only be open to Niagara College students and staff.

In Welland, there will two events open to the general public.

The Winter Pop-Up Market will run Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Applied Health Foyer. The event, which began in 2024, will highlight Black-owned businesses and provide opportunities to meet and connect with Black business owners.

The Black Owned 905 organization runs the market in partnership with Niagara College’s Equity, Diversion, Inclusion teams, the Niagara College student administrative council, and the college’s community relations and events team.

The slam poetry workshop runs from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Room N018. The Rochelle Bush lecture will take place both on Zoom and in Room N018 at the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
