Niagara Region says a closed-circuit television surveillance camera is watching the vandalized speed camera site on Niagara Stone Road.
But the speed camera itself is nowhere to be seen.
The region confirmed Wednesday that surveillance is “in place” at the site, which saw repeated vandalism from May through August, while the speed camera was active.
It has not been active or replaced since the unit was chopped down and flowers were placed at the site, following its disappearance last month.
Regional spokesperson Jason Misner said in an emailed response that more information about the surveillance unit will be provided “when we are able.”
The region did not respond to questions about when the surveillance camera was installed, who owns it, whether it has been operational, or if it has recorded any incidents of vandalism by press time.
Officials also did not provide details, in time, on costs, whether the system is monitored, or if similar cameras will be used at other speed camera sites.
