The third in a new series of local horse shows will be held at Benchview Equestian Centre in Niagara-on-the-Lake Saturday.

Called the Heart of Niagara Equestrian Series, the shows are targeting avid equestrians at all levels of competition in in the Niagara region.

The first two shows were at Grandview Farms in Pelham, and the next two will be at Benchview, said organizer Caitlin Disher. She and her sister Jasmine Darte, riding instructors at Benchview, have been working with Grandview to offer a new series that would showcase local riders and their horses.

Saturday's show will feature several divisions of competition, with ages from young children up to age 18, and from beginners on up.

The show runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the last event a Hunter Derby Spectacular, featuring about 12 hurdles and jumps similar to what would be found in fox hunting, said Disher, and a $500 purse that will be paid out for first to fifth place.

It's open to the public to watch, and a portion of the proceeds will go to Red Roof Retreat.

It's a fun event for spectators, said Disher, although she warns parents that "it's every little girl's dream to ride a horse," so there might be some children who want to take up riding lessons once they've watched other children compete.

Benchview Equestrian Centre is at 834 Queenston Rd. in NIagara-on-the-Lake.
