April Pools Day to teach water safety

Get out and make a splash this Saturday for just $1, as the city of St. Catharines celebrates April Pools Day at the St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre.

The event will offer residents a chance to take part in a leisure swim and water-smart activities from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with the goal of promoting swimming as a life skill and making people feel confident in water.

“Learning basic swimming skills and water safety will help swimmers enjoy themselves more because they will know what to do if they suddenly begin struggling to keep their heads above water,” said Jennifer Green, the city’s aquatics supervisor.

On top of the leisure swim, April Pools Day will feature water safety trivia; CPR and drowning prevention demonstrations; and other self-help techniques.

Families can also put their water safety skills to the test with “Family Swim to Survive” activities.

The swim is presented by the Lifesaving Society and the city of St. Catharines.

According to the Lifesaving Society, nearly two-thirds of drowning deaths in Ontario between 2010 and 2014 happened during recreational activities, including swimming or playing near water.

Green said knowing water-safety basics can help prevent most water-related injuries and deaths.

Admission is a minimum donation of $1, with proceeds supporting Lifesaving Society’s drowning prevention campaign.
