The Soup Kitchen (Niagara Falls Community Outreach) served more than 42,000 meals in 2017 — around 115 meals per day.

Each meal comes with a cost of about $3, according to the Kitchen, meaning the cost of keeping the service going is in the ballpark of $126,000 annually.

Nearly 100 per cent of that is donated by the community and raised by volunteers, said the Elaine Upper, former chairwoman of the Kitchen.

Upper said the number was a slight rise from 2016, and that the Kitchen saw an increase in young adults around 25-years-old.

Community Outreach also arranges numerous charitable events throughout the year and helps low-income families complete their income taxes.

In 2017, Kitchen volunteers completed more than 250 tax returns, 50 of them being done remotely for people who have difficulty leaving their houses. The total amount of benefits paid out by the government as a result of the clinics was $350,830.16, said a Kitchen newsletter.

Niagara Falls Community Outreach is located at 4865 St. Lawrence Ave., Niagara Falls.

Meals are served from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday to Friday, except Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day, New Years Eve Day, New Years Day, and when school buses have been cancelled due to dangerous weather conditions.

Evening meals are offered Nov. 1 to March 31, every evening from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
