Woman, 80, unhurt after car lands in garden centre pond

An 80-year-old woman was behind the wheel when the vehicle she was driving ended up in a pond Friday morning at the Sunshine Express Garden Centre.

The woman had minor injuries, police say. She managed to exit the car and was helped by people nearby. She didn’t go to the hospital after the incident and there were no other passengers in the car.

Officers were called to the garden centre on Carlton Street near the Welland Canal at around 9 a.m., said Stephanie Sabourin, media relations specialist for Niagara Regional Police.

Police are still investigating how the car ended up in the pond but "charges are not anticipated," Sabourin said in an email response to The Lake Report.

Staff at the Sunshine Express Garden Centre declined to comment.
